Summary

Old World Bluestems include several species of perennial warm-season grasses introduced from Eastern Europe and Asia from as early as 1917.  Since that time more introductions have been made from Russia, 印度, 伊拉克, 巴基斯坦, 阿富汗, 和土耳其.  These various species are adapted to a wide variety of soils but prefer clay loam and loam soils.  They are very drought and cold tolerant, 抗病, insect resistant and very palatable to livestock. The main advantage the Old World Bluestems have over most all native grasses is their exceptional tolerance to close repetitive grazing.  They respond well to commercial fertilizers and produce high yields of good quality forage when managed intensively.  Old World Bluestems range from prostrate to erect growth habits.  When not heavily grazed they produce a prolific number of seed heads with light chaffy seed that has the potential to be very invasive.

WW Spar Bluestem is a productive, highly palatable, old world bluestem grass.  It was released cooperatively by the Southern Plains 范围 研究 Station of Woodward, OK and the Oklahoma Agriculture Experiment Station in 1982.  WW Spar Bluestem is a perennial tufted bunchgrass with an upright growth habit.  WW Spar Bluestem is winter hardy and has excellent persistence and vigor, 对肥料反应良好.  It’s seasonal forage production pattern blends well with other forages in a grazing system, with excellent grazing from June to October.  It has earlier spring green-up and produces more forage under droughty conditions than many of the other components of Plains Bluestem.
